Stop-and-go on Coast Highway 101 and the hills up to Olivenhain are hard on a clutch. Every start from a stop slips the disc a little, and eventually the friction surface wears thin. A clutch rarely fails without warning, and dealing with it at the first signs can save the flywheel.

Clutch and manual transmission work is part of the transmission repair we do, and we have a technician experienced in transmission work. We see manual Wranglers, Tacomas, 4Runners, Civics, Fits, Mazda3s, Subarus, MINIs, and Porsches.

How we diagnose and repair clutches and manual gearboxes

  1. Inspect

A test drive, a check of pedal feel and the hydraulic system, and a look for leaks that could contaminate a clutch.

  2. Explain and estimate

We tell you whether it's the clutch, the hydraulics, or the gearbox, and write up an estimate.

  3. You approve

The transmission stays in until you say yes.

  4. Repair

We replace worn clutch parts, inspect the flywheel, and fix the leak that caused any oil contamination.

  5. Road test

We check engagement point, pedal feel, and every gear.

Nothing is repaired without your OK.

If the flywheel or gearbox needs more than the estimate, we call you with details first.

Frequently asked questions

Is it my clutch or my transmission?

Slipping, pedal changes, and a high engagement point usually mean the clutch or its hydraulics. Grinding in specific gears, jumping out of gear, or noise that ignores the pedal points to the gearbox. A test drive sorts it out.

Do I need a new flywheel with my clutch?

Sometimes. Dual-mass flywheels are often replaced; some single-mass flywheels can be reused if they're in spec. We inspect it once it's out and explain the options.

How long can I drive on a slipping clutch?

Not long. Slipping makes heat that damages the flywheel. Avoid hills and towing and have it checked soon. If it won't drive, we can arrange the nearest tow truck; towing is billed by the tow company.

Do you rebuild manual transmissions?

Yes. Depending on what failed, we repair or rebuild the gearbox and tell you which makes sense.

Can I bring my own clutch kit?

We can install a kit you supply. Customer-supplied parts carry no warranty, parts or labor.

Do you speak Spanish?

Yes. Se habla español.
