Check engine light on in Encinitas? We find the actual cause instead of just reading a code, then give you a written estimate for the engine repair. Because we're also a STAR-certified smog station, a light that's keeping you from passing smog can be diagnosed, repaired and retested here. Book online or call (760) 753-1000.

The check engine light is the engine computer telling you it saw something outside normal limits. It might be minor, like a loose gas cap, or it might be a misfire that can damage the catalytic converter if it's ignored. A code tells us where to start looking. It doesn't tell us which part failed.

Signs your engine needs attention

Check engine light on and steady
The engine computer stored a fault. Get it checked soon; it can also cause a smog failure.
Check engine light flashing
An active misfire. Reduce driving and have it checked promptly to avoid damaging the catalytic converter.
Rough idle or shaking
Usually a misfire, traced to ignition, fuel delivery or a vacuum leak.
Hesitation or loss of power
Fuel, air, ignition or sensor problems.
Fuel economy dropping
A sensor, ignition or fuel system problem the computer is compensating for.
Hard starting
Fuel delivery, ignition, or a sensor problem, if the battery and starter test fine.
Knocking, ticking, or smoke from the exhaust
Internal wear, low oil, or the engine burning oil or coolant.

How check engine light diagnosis works here

  1. Inspect

We scan for stored codes and freeze frame data, which shows the conditions when the fault set. Then we test: live sensor data, ignition and fuel checks, smoke testing for vacuum and evaporative leaks, and whatever else the code and symptoms point to.

  2. Explain and estimate

We tell you what failed and how we confirmed it. You get a written estimate for the repair.

  3. You approve

Nothing is repaired without your OK.

  4. Repair

We do the approved repair, from sensors, ignition parts and vacuum leaks to larger engine work.

  5. Road test

We clear the codes, drive the car to confirm the problem is gone, and recheck the system.

A code is a starting point

A code like "lean condition" or "misfire" can have several causes. Replacing the part named in a code description without testing is how drivers end up paying for parts that didn't fix anything. Testing takes a little longer and costs less in the end.

Engine repair after diagnosis

Once we know the cause, we handle the repair: ignition components, sensors, vacuum and intake leaks, gaskets and seals, timing components, cooling-related engine problems, and tune-up work. If it's major internal damage, we explain your options plainly.

Check engine light and smog

A lit check engine light can keep a car from passing smog. After a repair, the car's self-tests (readiness monitors) also need to complete through normal driving before the smog check, which can take some driving after the repair. We'll tell you what to expect for your vehicle.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive with the check engine light on?

If it's steady and the car drives normally, it's usually OK to drive it in for a check soon. If it's flashing, or the car is running badly, reduce driving and have it checked promptly.

Can a loose gas cap turn on the check engine light?

Yes. A cap that isn't sealing can set an evaporative system code. Tighten it; if the light stays on, have it checked.

Will my car pass smog with the check engine light on?

A lit check engine light can cause a smog failure. We can diagnose and repair the cause, then perform the smog check.

Why can't I smog the car right after a repair?

The engine computer runs self-tests during normal driving. After a repair or a battery disconnect, those tests need to finish before the smog check. We'll tell you what to expect.

Do you do tune-ups?

Yes. Engine tuning and tune-up work, such as ignition and filter service per your maintenance schedule, are part of what we do.
