Clunks, wandering or a floaty ride? At our Encinitas Blvd shop we find the worn suspension or steering part, show it to you, and give you a written estimate before any repair on your car, SUV or truck, including the Jeeps and Toyota trucks we see often. Walk in, book online or call (760) 753-1000.
Your suspension keeps the tires planted and the ride controlled; your steering keeps the car going where you point it. When parts wear, the car feels loose, noisy or floaty, and tires start wearing unevenly.
Encinitas STAR Smog & Auto Repair handles steering and suspension repair and replacement on cars, SUVs and trucks, including the Jeeps and Toyota trucks and SUVs that come through our bay often. We find the worn part, show it to you, and give you a written estimate first.

How a suspension and steering repair works here
Inspect
We road test to hear and feel the problem, then inspect on the lift: we check ball joints, tie rods and bushings for play, look for leaking shocks and struts, and check springs, mounts and power steering components.
Explain and estimate
We show you the worn part and explain what it's doing to the ride, the steering and your tires. Then you get a written estimate.
You approve
Nothing is repaired without your OK.
Repair
We replace the approved parts. Shocks and struts are typically replaced in pairs on the same axle so the car handles evenly.
Road test
We drive the car to confirm the noise and looseness are gone. An alignment is usually recommended after this work. We don't offer alignments, so if your car needs one afterward, we'll say so and you can book it elsewhere.
Trucks and SUVs
Jeep Wranglers and Grand Cherokees, Toyota 4Runners and Tundras, and Chevrolet and Ford pickups are regulars in our bay. Heavier vehicles and larger tires are harder on steering and suspension parts, so a clunk or wander on a truck is worth having checked before it wears out your tires.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between shocks and struts?
Both control bounce. A strut is also a structural part of the suspension that supports the spring; a shock isn't. Your vehicle may have one or both.
Do I need an alignment after suspension work?
An alignment is usually recommended after this work. We don't offer alignments, so if your car needs one afterward, we'll say so and you can book it elsewhere.
Should shocks and struts be replaced in pairs?
Generally, yes, on the same axle. Replacing one side can leave the car handling unevenly.
Is it safe to drive with a clunk in the front end?
A clunk means something is loose or worn. Some parts, like ball joints and tie rod ends, affect steering control. Have it checked soon.
Do you work on trucks and SUVs?
Yes. Jeeps, Toyota trucks and SUVs, and Ford and Chevrolet pickups are regulars in our bay.
