The Toyota Prius is the single most common model in our job photos, ahead of every pickup and SUV. Encinitas drives a lot of hybrids, and many of them are now old enough that the hybrid battery, its cooling fan, and the 12-volt battery need attention.

Hybrid problems are easy to misread. A tired 12-volt battery can stop a hybrid from powering on, and a cooling fan packed with dust can make a healthy battery overheat and throw warnings. We sort out which it is with testing, then put a written estimate in front of you.

How hybrid diagnosis works here

  1. Inspect

We scan the hybrid, battery, and engine computers, then check block-by-block battery voltage and temperature, the cooling fan, and the 12-volt battery.

  2. Explain and estimate

You see what the test data shows and get a written estimate.

  3. You approve

Nothing starts until you agree to it.

  4. Repair

We follow high-voltage safety procedures for the approved repair, whether that's fan cleaning, a 12-volt battery, or a hybrid battery.

  5. Road test

We drive to confirm the battery charges and assists normally and the warning stays off.

Nothing is repaired without your OK.

If the battery data points to more than we expected, we stop and talk to you first.

Hybrid due for smog? A hybrid with a warning on can run into trouble at smog time. See our STAR smog check page or call about your car. If your car fails and we do the repair here, the smog check fee is credited toward the repair.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my hybrid battery is going bad?

Common signs are falling fuel mileage, a battery gauge that swings quickly, the engine running more, and a hybrid system warning. A test of each battery block confirms it.

Do you replace hybrid batteries?

Yes. Hybrid battery testing and replacement are part of our hybrid service. Your written estimate lists the battery and labor before anything is ordered.

Why won't my Prius turn on?

Often the small 12-volt battery is weak, even if the hybrid battery is fine. We test it first. If the car can't be driven, call us and we'll arrange the nearest tow truck; towing is billed by the tow company.

How often should the battery cooling fan be cleaned?

It depends on dust, pets, and how the car is used. We check it whenever a hybrid is in, since a clogged fan lets the battery run hot.

Can I bring my own hybrid battery?

We can install one you supply. Customer-supplied parts carry no warranty, parts or labor.

How can I pay?

Cash, major credit and debit cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay are all welcome here. Ask about current coupons.
